OUGD503: Responsive- Workshop

For this workshop relating to responsive we looked back at some briefs from the previous year to generate ideas on how we could tackle our own responsive briefs. In small groups we were given a brief to redesign the Yahoo! website in order to attract a younger audience (13-18). 


We started by brainstorming all the problems with the current webpage as well as potential ideas and solutions to these problems. The key theme was that the current Yahoo webpage was far too busy, complicated and trying to be too many things so we suggested creating a stripped back version where the many different elements Yahoo! offered were grouped into six different categories displayed on a homepage: Mail, Search, News, Entertainment, Shopping, Film.


We designed/sketched a homepage with six boxes and the yahoo logo beneath it, once you logged in you would be transported to a framed screen where the six icons would be on either side of the main content page (bottom left) and if you continued on the site without logging in you'd be taken to the page with the icons at the bottom (bottom right).


We then focused on creating vectorised icons for the main page and the rest of the site, we wanted icons that weren't obvious choices but that still communicated clearly what each section was. 


As the day drew on we then looked into mocking up, at minimum, the home page. We changed the Yahoo! purple into a lighter, not so horrid on the eyes, version. The idea with the homepage is to have no text and pure icons, stripping back the complicated issues completely. Instead of flooding people with many, busy different things, we'd allow them the choice to look at what they wanted. The clean cut, simple homepage we designed is a thousand miles away from the over crowded and aged look of the current webpage. We believe this easier to interact experience, entertainment and films sections and the eye catching design will bring in the younger audiences whilst the news, mail and search segments will hold onto the existing yahoo users.
