BA (Hons.) GRAPHIC DESIGN
LEVEL

 Module Title
Design Practice

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME
Rosalyn Halford

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I’ve learnt an awful lot this module: time management, learning to care about design in order to make it successful, learning to ask for help/swallowing the pride and just asking for assistance, the positive effect consistent feedback can have on your designs as well as learning a little bit more about my ‘style’ as a designer and who I want to be.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I’ve gotten a lot more confident with screen-printing this term. I’ve also began to understand the processes of lino print and wood block creation and how truly effective time management is required to make both a success (and how attempting to rush all of these methods ends up in poor production and poor design).

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

Certainly beginning got develop a personal touch to design and I will go on to develop my style in the next two years- also beginning to understand what I want to do and what kind of student/designer I would like to become, I will use this skill to create an identity for myself and to find a market that I would most suitably fit into. Asking for help and swallowing the pride; not being afraid to look a little stupid or like a beginner because I am both- When approaching new techniques and ideas I can now, without worry ask for assistance in order to produce the most professional looking work possible. Dealing with my emotions and not letting pressure get on top of me- I can handle stress so much better now and this is going to be INCREDIBLY useful.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

I’m not good at connecting with a subject I have no interest in or designing for something I care little about- I will attempt to develop ways of making me enjoy and like subjects that I may have no personal connection with in order to produce a good piece of design and to not let myself down.
Time management- I am getting better at this; I still need some work in planning and preparing how I will use my time certainly when it comes to the development and production of designs.
Rushing things- I think I’m smarter than I am and more talented than I am, no one can produce a decent screen print in one evening- I need to recongise this and allow myself a suitable amount of time for production.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1. Plan ahead- I will book print slots and set dates for completion of work so I can spend a better amount of time producing my work.
Take time and care- when producing final pieces I need to overestimate the amount of time it will take me in order to produce something truly successful
2. Ask for help- whether it’s feedback, not fully understanding a method or process or not fully understanding a brief or question I will no longer be scared of looking stupid and will just ask for help; that’s what the help is there for.
3. Stop worrying and comparing- I am an individual, in my methods and process’s, in my production and designs, I need to stop comparing my work to others or feel as though I have to adjust to be a part of the majority, people will want me for my unique twist and style not for being able to look like everyone else.
4. Breathe- when it comes to being overwhelmed I need to just stop letting things get to me so much, yes it’s good to worry and it’s good to be scared but when it consumes what I do then it becomes an issue I need to deal with.
5. Enjoy it- when I don’t like a subject or I don’t connect with a brief I must find a way to do so otherwise I will consistently produce poor designs and work for briefs I don’t particularly like- this isn’t professional and needs to be dealt with.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
