OUGD603: Creative Networks Poster Design- Research and Ideas

Create a poster for the creative networks talks, starting with Andrew Graham Dixon and Daft Punk.

Andrew Graham Dixon.
Art critic who has hosted many programmes on the subject of art and writes columns.

Articles- Archive
Most of his writing is detailed, descriptive and thoughtful, well considered rounded approaches where he appreciates the art rather than criticises it. This gentler touch makes his work very accessible and useful in the contexts of learning and writing and enjoyment.

He hosts the Culture Show along with Lauren Laverne and Mark Kemode as well as many other art based programmes. His main focus is on traditional art, the masters of the renaissance and traditional painting. Like his writing his loves are the more detailed works, things that display great talent as well as great concepts.

Ideas

Idea 1- Bookshelves
Inspired by his writing and his love for detail this poster would feature a photograph of old artistic books on a shelf. On two of the largest book spines the blurb would be erased and replaced with his name and the date/time of the talk. The concepts behind this poster include a reflection on detail, a nod to his critical writing and a reflection of classical art and text. The writing will most likely be foiled in gold to make it stand out from the image.

Idea 2- Stained Glass

The poster would feature a stained glass window, either as an etching or a photograph nodding towards detail. The use of a stained glass window not only reflects on art within the glass but also architecture and history, subjects often included in his programmes.

Idea 3- Gilded Frame

This image would be green and gold, gold text with the name and date surrounded by a detailed golden frame on a green background. The frame suggests art, classical art, detail and finery. The image also 'frames' the main subject (Andrew G Dixon) and makes him a work of art, reflecting the importance of his talk and the focus that should be drawn on him. The text and the frame will hopefully be foiled to add a touch of quality, high class and decorative detail to the image, hinted towards classical art and drawing attention to the image.

Idea 4- Wallpaper

Inspired by wallpaper patterns in stately homes and manors this poster would have an ornate pattern with text layered over the top. Instead of directly displaying art instead this design gives a flavour of the environment in which a lot of high class and unique works of art are displayed. The pattern itself is also artistic and highly detailed giving off a sense of class.

Daft Punk

An electro music duo who rose to fame in the 90s and still continues to be popular today. They are known for their 'futuristic' style and both don robot looking helmets and produce arty style videos and music. Their album Discovery was converted into a full feature length anime film called Interstella 5555 and many of their products have a strange futuristic, yet aged look to them showing a combination of music, style and design.

Ideas

Idea 1- Helmets
A very basic and obvious visual, two helmets, two stars, one either side. 'This is daft punk.' However this idea does sum up the whole thing easily, here they are, look at them. Plus with visuals as iconic as their trademark helmets it would be a waste and a shame to not use them in at least one idea. Being produced in a flat vector style this idea also represents the minimal and modern style they use in a lot of their iconography and logos.

Idea 2- Old Timey
Inspired by the advertising style used on their website this poster would have a faded 90's look showing the band with their backs to the viewer talking to an audience. Once again its an obvious connection but it incorporates more of their style when promoting products other than albums. Its retro look goes hand in hand with their retro old school music that made them initially famous.

Idea 3- Harder. Better. Faster. Daft Punk.
This typographic based poster would include lyrics from one of Daft Punks most famous songs Harder Better Faster Stronger. These lyrics would be printed across the page in a minimalist and modern san serif font all in one colour. The only variation would be the date, time and name of the band standing out from the words. The date and time will be printed in silver metallic ink and daft punk in gold. This is a more subtle nod to the look of the band members as well as one of their songs that also fits in with the modern simple look.

Idea 4- Ilumunati Confirmed
Using one of their main symbols this triangle/pyramid based design is simple, geometric line art.
