OUDGD404: Type Journal

Pub Sign Type

This hand painted serif font was found in the window of a pub and works in the favour of the pubs theme, 'alternative'. The thinness of the strokes, the variation in line weights and the detail on the serifs make it appear to mimicking type of lead origins. This variation in line width also gives it a slight touch of the gothic nature and whilst surrounded by embellished and painted swirls, these only strengthen that feeling. I would characterise this type as historic and although normally I would say it also connotes formality and high authority I believe these connotations are being used in a juxtaposing manner, the fact they are normally seen as formal makes them seem more edgy when used in the context of a sign on a drinking establishment.
