The type used for the series planet earth looks lead or silicone, however I am certain that it's san serif and gothic type. The frail, thin looking glyphs appear to be fragile, all lowercase and squat to the ground. I feel this is suitable as it represents the fragility of the planet earth itself. It also appears rather minimal, modern and no nonsense, purely neutral and informative, not wanting to influence an audience through design. The fact the type has been set in all lowercase appears to me to be adding a sense of informality to the text, it's trying to get people to watch a documentary and wants to show them it's not overly intense or brain frying and so does this by appealing to them with lowercase letters, that appear much softer and quitter than uppercase ones.
